She Kills Monsters

Written by Qui Nguyen
A comedic romp into the world of fantasy role-playing games, She Kills Monsters tells the story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, however, she stumbles into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was Tilly’s refuge. “A heart-pounding, hilarious, emotional ride celebrating the warrior (and the nerd) within us all.” – DC Metro Theater Arts

welcome to Charlotte's Off-Broadway

Led by Producing Artistic Director Anne Lambert, Charlotte’s Off-Broadway (COB) creates bold, contemporary theater that centers authentic female experiences and explores questions of justice, identity, and connection. Our work entertains while provoking thought—through stories of marriage, friendship, career, and art.

COB operates a 56-seat black box theatre and a rehearsal studio inside The VAPA Center in uptown Charlotte. When not producing our own projects, we rent our spaces to independent producers at below-market rates. If you present a show here, it’s under your own banner—not by COB or by VAPA.

Shows take place “in the COB Black Box Theatre at The VAPA Center” to help build our brand and distinguish our venue from others.

Coming January 2026: The Flirt Bar in Concert

Charlotte’s Off-Broadway and Susan Lambert Hatem are teaming up to produce a concert reading of The Flirt Bar, a new comedic play with music by Amy Ray and Michelle Malone, at Synchronicity Theatre in Atlanta, GA, January 5–11, 2026. Public performances will be January 10 & 11.

Set in a dive bar where the jukebox never dies and the regulars know your secrets, The Flirt Bar explores the messy, hilarious, and sometimes heartbreaking ways we seek connection—especially when we’re not sure what we’re looking for. This concert reading builds on previous workshops in Charlotte and Los Angeles, where eight original songs from the show were recently staged.

The Story:

When heartbroken Bible Belt wife Honey B. Dews loses everything, she and her book club decide to turn a former strip club into The Flirt Bar, where women can go and be flirted with. To pull it off, she must team up with Raquel Ramone—the hard-singing, god-fearing, gay Greek chorus of a singer who comes with the place.

Stay tuned for ticket details and casting updates as we bring this vibrant new work to life.

Saturday, June 11, 2022 – THE INHERITANCE by Matthew Lopez, produced by Dan Grogan; doors open at 6pm, reading at 7pm

Matthew Lopez’ epic play, The Inheritance reimagines E.M. Forster’s Howard’s End as a contemporary portrait of New York’s gay community. A generation after the height of the AIDS crisis, the play explores what it is like to be a young gay man in New York. What does the current generation owe to its forebears? At the center of the play stands Eric Glass, around whom characters swirl in and out of love, apartments, and arguments. The Inheritance addresses serious questions about sexual identity as well as asking what the gay community has lost, and also gained, in the last twenty years.
