Charlotte’s Off-Broadway (COB) is a professional home-grown theatre company founded in 2004 by Producing Artistic Director Anne Lambert. Located in the 56-seat COB Black Box Theatre inside the VAPA Center in Uptown Charlotte, COB produces bold contemporary theatre that challenges perspectives, celebrates underrepresented voices, and creates meaningful connections between artists and audiences. In addition to producing its own work, COB provides an affordable, professional home for emerging playwrights, independent artists, and smaller theatre companies to develop, rehearse, and present new work.

Charlotte’s Off-Broadway is dedicated to producing professional contemporary theatre that explores authentic human experiences, fosters empathy, and inspires conversation. Through innovative productions and creative collaborations, we strive to strengthen Charlotte’s theatre community while providing opportunities for artists and audiences to engage with stories that matter.

Anne Lambert founded Charlotte’s Off-Broadway to create a space where bold, contemporary theatre could thrive outside traditional models. The company was built to champion new work, amplify female voices, and provide an accessible venue where independent artists could bring productions to life without prohibitive costs. The name 'Charlotte’s Off-Broadway' reflects both its artistic independence and its commitment to creating professional theatre rooted in Charlotte.
Anne Lambert has spent more than three decades as one of Charlotte’s leading independent theatre artists. As a producer, director, actor, and arts advocate, she has championed contemporary plays, inventive storytelling, and opportunities for underrepresented voices.
A founding member of Chickspeare and of the VAPA Center, Anne has received numerous Metrolina Theatre Awards, including Theatre Person of the Year in 2024. Her artistic vision continues to shape Charlotte’s Off-Broadway as a home for professional home-grown theatre and a catalyst for Charlotte’s growing theatre community.

With more than 40 years of professional experience in stage management and production, Anna Montgomerie brings a wealth of expertise to Charlotte's Off-Broadway. A graduate of the North Carolina School of the Arts and a past member of Actors' Equity Association, she has worked with companies including the Cleveland Play House, Národní divadlo (Prague), the Guthrie Theater, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and the Berkshire Theatre Festival. As Production Manager, Anna oversees theatre rentals and collaborates closely with visiting artists and production teams, ensuring each project is expertly supported from the initial inquiry through the final curtain.
